During pregnancy, many women experience changes in skin pigmentation and the development of stretch marks.
Skin Pigmentation
Hormonal Changes: Increased levels of hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, can lead to darkening of the skin, known as hyperpigmentation.
Common Areas Affected: The linea nigra (a dark line that runs from the navel to the pubic bone), areolas, and other areas may darken.
Chloasma: Also known as the "mask of pregnancy, " this condition involves brown patches on the face, especially on the cheeks and forehead.
Stretch Marks
Causes: Stretch marks (striae gravidarum) occur when the skin stretches rapidly due to the growing belly and weight gain.
Appearance: Initially, they may appear red, purple, or dark brown and may later fade to a lighter color.
Prevention and Treatment: While they may not be entirely preventable, keeping the skin moisturized and maintaining a healthy weight can help. Treatments post-pregnancy include topical creams and laser therapy.
