What Is an Ovulation Study?
An ovulation study (also called ovulation tracking or follicular study) is a medical method used to monitor a woman's ovulation cycle. It helps determine if and when ovulation occurs, which is critical for couples trying to conceive.

Why Is It Done?
Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary. Conception can only happen if sperm meets the egg at the right time. An ovulation study helps to:

Confirm that you're ovulating.

Identify the most fertile days of your cycle.

Diagnose issues like irregular ovulation, anovulation (no ovulation), or hormonal imbalance.

Time intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) for the best chance of pregnancy.

Methods of Ovulation Study
Ultrasound Follicular Monitoring (done at a clinic)

A transvaginal ultrasound tracks the development of follicles (which contain the eggs) in the ovaries.

The doctor monitors:

Follicle size and growth.

Thickness of the uterine lining (endometrium).

The release of the egg (ovulation).

Usually done several times between Day 10 and Day 16 of the cycle.

Hormone Blood Tests

LH (Luteinizing Hormone) surge detection.

Progesterone levels post-ovulation.

Home Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPKs)

Detect LH surge in urine 12–36 hours before ovulation.

Useful for timing intercourse.

Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Charting

Involves taking your temperature every morning.

A slight rise (about 0.5°F) indicates ovulation has occurred.

Cervical Mucus Observation

During ovulation, mucus becomes clear, stretchy, and egg-white-like.

How It Helps with Conception
Maximizes Timing: Helps couples plan intercourse during the fertile window (typically 2 days before ovulation to 1 day after).

Guides Fertility Treatments: Essential for procedures like IUI or IVF to be timed correctly.

Identifies Problems Early: If ovulation isn’t occurring regularly or properly, doctors can recommend treatment (e.g., ovulation-inducing medications like Clomid or Letrozole).
